“One of the things Maggie loved most about Aunt Delia was that she didn’t say, “Life’s unfair, get used to it,” like Maggie’s mother would have. Instead, she really listened and empathized. Delia was always available with a shoulder to cry on or a cup of tea if Maggie needed to unburden herself. While she didn’t often avail herself of the privilege, it was nice knowing it was there when she needed it. “How are you doing?” Maggie asked her. Delia suffered from a variety of health problems, but she didn’t list them and fret over them like some people. “Oh, I’m fine,” she said, patting herself down as if checking. “There are still lots of years left in this old carcass.”
