A book you'll read in a day and remember for a lifetime. It's really good! Both the story and the style.

This book is a masterpiece, an absolute masterpiece. I was mesmerized by every page, all 800+ of them. Each chapter is its own all-inclusive story, and they span several centuries of Caribbean history. Their plots/characters connect only loosely, but ...more
Wes Young is starting Caribbean: I want to say, as an update: I just read the first chapter (or, really, the first short story in this collection of stories). It's titled "A Hedge of Croton," and it is incredible. I mean it. It's something like what I would call the perfect short story. I was so hooked, moved, engaged and enraged, and, at the end, perfectly satisfied by how Michener rounded it off. Wow.

That Miller's Tale, whew. How about that?

I'll admit I did not read all the tales in this book. I was enjoying myself well enough, but the reading (even with the wonderful translation I'm using) is pretty taxing on a low-budget mind like mine. Maybe I

This book is a treasure I'm so glad I found. My grandfather participated in some of these "tractorcades" and protests. I've always wondered what the story was with all these things, and now Mr. Lancaster has delivered in a concise and enjoyable book. ...more
