I think the theme of this book could be protection. I think this because even after Mother got jumped, Dad still wants to make sure that his daughter is staying away from the boys. For example, on page 118, it says "Pretty, too. The boys looking at you yet?" Her father is making sure that she is safe because maybe he thinks that the same thing can happen to her, as what happened to Mother.
