ugh how is this book still so relevant all these years later!!! javert representing punitive, carceral justice and valjean representing restorative justice. the way montreuil-sur-mer reacts to the news of him being valjean and just... turning on him. fantine being thrown in a pauper's grave without being remembered bc the cure decided she didn't deserve a proper burial and no one was left to advocate for her... FUCK.

is this heavy-handed with the god and the catholicism? yes! is it still so touching to watch a man turn away from cruelty repeatedly despite how cruel the world has been to him? yes!!! that is why this is The Novel!!!

cosette and jean valjean i love you so much. the kindness and hope that radiate off you both are so important to me and i will never not adore you as characters. and i haven't even made it to my favorite character yet! i'm this soft and emotional over characters that i'm like "yeah cool they're here" about!!!!

"there are souls that, crablike, crawl continually toward darkness, going backward in life rather than advancing, using their experience to increase their deformity, growing continually worse..."

there are two major inciting incidents in les mis and despite this chapter being super short it is probably the second most pivotal chapter in the story. i love you cosette.

"history ignores almost all these minutiae: it cannot do otherwise... nonetheless, these details, which are incorrectly termed little - there being neither little facts in humanity nor little leaves in vegetation - are useful. it is the features of the years that makes up the face of the century."

FUCK felix all my homies HATE felix.

"how mournful the moment when society draws back and permits the irreparable loss of a sentient being."

book 2 of fantine was essentially 70 pages of victor hugo pointing out how fucked up imprisoning people is and i love it so much.
