After returning to reality, Jack has a hard time understanding every aspect of the real world. Reunited with family, Ma just wants everything back to normal. She gets so fed up after an interview, she tries to kill herself. Jack is forced to live without her for a week, until she recovers. They move into independent living, and the book ends with them saying goodbye to room.

After trying a first plan to escape that failed, "Ma" told Jack he had to play dead so Old Nick would take him and bury him, giving Jack a chance to run and get help. He did just that when Old Nick was driving. Jack approached a random person, barely being able to communicate but the police came and eventually went and rescued Ma. Right now they're at the hospital getting examined.Jack is confused and scared.

Haven't gotten much farther into the book, but I'm starting to see how truly sad the story is. Jack's mom continues to try to give him an education, teaching him lessons and providing "P.E." Jack actually stays awake when Old Nick came in, which upsets his mother.

I'm just now really getting into the book. It was slow at first, but it's getting there. Jack, is the narrator and the 'room' is all he knows. He thinks its normal. However, his mom knows that it is where she has been held ever since Old Nick kidnapped her. Old Nick brings them the supplies they need and comes in every night, when Jack hears the creeks of the bed. Jack's mom tries her hardest to keep things normal.
