Lily just found out the Snow flower doesn't actually come from a wealthy family. Her dad is addicted to drugs and spent all of their money awhile back. Her mom doesn't know how to work or teach her daughter how to do chores. This explains why Lily and her were paired up, they both taught each other things.

Snow flower has been very negative about her situation with her new family. He is always sad and depressed and is does not seem like her. I don't think this is in snow flowers character, but it adds depth to the story.

I really don't like that during this time period, men are below women. It is hard for me to imagine if my life was like Lilly's. Men in this book are considered above women and they beat their wives.

Lily is finally pregnant, and had been trying to become pregnant for a long time. She knows she is pregnant because she throws up one morning. This is confusing to me because in this time period, people get sick easily so what makes them know for sure she is pregnant?

Update: beautiful moon has just died from a bee sting. This is a really hard part to read because unlike nowadays, people don't have an epipen to take when they get an allergic reaction. The girls are helpless as she dies in her fathers arms.

Lily will be meeting her laotong soon. Her name is snow flower, and she come from a very good family. They have to sign a contract that they will be friends forever. This is really surprising to me because I feel that a friendship contract is too much pressure on a relationship for a young girl like Lily.

Lily and beautiful moon have been foot binding. It is very painful yet necessary for the girls to marry well. Third sister has died from a infection that happened during her foot binding. The girls grandmother also died.
