I just discovered midway reading that the book is a response to George Orwell's essay "Why I Write," and therefore I might pause and check Orwell's essay before resuming.

But is it necessary though or can it be read without having to read the essay?

It's not necessary; I am just curious to understand the connection, not to mention my admiration for Orwell.
