Well, I'm being reminded just how good a writer Martin is. This was a Jon chapter. The meeting with Craster feels less foreboding than in the TV series (we're getting up to more or less where I gave up on the show) and is handled with more pragmatism. There's also a lovely - truly lovely - piece of pathetic fallacy that simply blew me away. I'm really rather enjoying this.

Picked this up again after a long gap. Just had a nice Bran chapter. Martin's mastery of detail is impressive; his world-building is likewise incredibly good. Currently in a Catelyn chapter; Martin introduces Brienne very memorably - and cleverly. I might just be easing myself back into this.

Now add to my growing list of things to admire about George R R Martin his evocation of place. We go from an abandoned desert city to the wilds beyond The Wall as effortlessly as a hot knife cutting through the proverbial butter. Utterly brilliant.

This is very absorbing stuff. So many characters, but Martin makes each and every one of them believable and interesting. Excellent stuff.
