The media-made killers (Jack The Ripper & H.H. Holmes) and slasher films come under scrutiny over two lectures.

Surprised to discover that Poe's invention of Dupin was not the first English-language detective as I often heard. Apparently, that honour goes to a female writer and female literary detective by a few months!

This lecture series may not be quite what I expected as chapters on vampires/werewolves and gothic archetypes indicate. That said, I'm finding the material quite interesting.

Starting with Elizabeth Bathory, one of, if not the most, prolific female serial killers in history... according to her accusers. I've heard it suggested that the charges may have been exaggerated, but it seems where there's smoke, there's fire.
