I did enjoy this book, to an extent, but I'm still finding myself skimming as I reach the end, just because this book took me so freaking long to read. Note to self: next time, read more than 20 pages per day.

Being a vet in the 30s sounds awful. I wonder if it's any better today.

I'm not really sure what else there is to say about this, given how many status updates I've made. It's entertaining enough to sustain 200 pages, not entertaining enough to sustain 400. That's about all I have to say.

Having read so much of this, Herriot's style is getting a bit predictable. This wouldn't be a problem if this were released as two books, like it was supposed to be, but I guess there's nothing I can do about that.

For a vet with no demonstrated interest in literature, this is surprisingly well-written.

I'm not sure how much this is a general memoir, and how much it's exclusively about Herriot being a vet. Like, does he really have so little of a life outside of being a vet that the only other noteworthy thing he does is court this woman?

There are a few very funny moments in this book, certainly. Although on the whole, being a vet sounds like it really sucks.

There's a goddamn reason this was published as two separate books in Britain. I know that this book isn't actually that long in the grand scheme of things, but it feels like it goes on forever.

Seriously, I have been kind of hard on this book in these updates. This really is well-written, and entertaining, if only mildly so.

I feel like I would like this a lot better if I had time to read it faster.
