The leader of the Azariqah (Nafi’) made takfir of a man who did takfir those who refused to make Hijra to them, even if they held the creed of the Azariqah. Then when that man died, Nafi’ changed his opinion to the opinion of that man and refused to takfir himself over the kufri position he held to prior.

The concept of ‘Imamite Occulation’ long preceded the Twelver sect, and set the precedent for its employment by the late Twelvers when the 11th Imam died before birthing a son. Tons of examples of this in here.
