The setting of this story is a record shop. The protagonist, Rob owns this shop. This record store doesn't get much business. One reason for this might be that the employees push away any customers with "a bad taste in music". This record store has mainly rock music. It's a disgrace to hear anyone mention pop music within the shop.

The story archetype is comedic. Many times throughout the book there are comedic moments. Some reoccurring comedic moments is that the main character in this story, Johnny always gets rejected. No one wants to date him. He goes to a record shop everyday because it's all he really has.

The protagonist in this book seems to be a failure at relationships. The book starts out with him talking about all the relationships he's failed at and ranked them in order from most embarrassing to least embarrassing. This guy is not very successful at the dating thing. Most of the relationships he's been in he's been cheated on and the others he just messes up, big time.
