“He was a Southerner and a slaveholder—yet in his heart of hearts he looked forward to the day when slavery would end.” - perspectives like that make me curious. If only we could have a conversation with him. I want to know why he owned slaves and why he was looking forward to slavery ending at the same time. When I was young, I’d be angry with him for owning slaves. Now I’m just curious. Reality is gray.
