I think I've found the link back to writing in some of the TRPG research - the Structuralist notion that writing, in its semiotic selection, makes a reader. Our author here refers to literary texts, but even technical texts can do this both in symbol selection and in leading inference. I link it with John Wick's analysis that page count indicates what your game is about.
