Narrator Joseph K. is a bit full of himself, displaying a strong sense of individualism: he expects his own good sense and charisma to get him out of his legal predicament, despite knowing and having engaged very little with the judicial process. Despite this, he is difficult to hate because his mistakes are unsurprising, given that at this point he still doesn't know even the severity of the crime he's accused of.
