this book is nasty & has no point

trying hard to understand the purpose of this story? we can learn through imagination with fiction, but I'm a loss here... three FMCs POVs + a loa's, who is channeled through them all... they all live hard, brutal lives... okay?.. I'm not entertained by relentless suffering and inane musings

& it just got worse… cuz why the motherfuck are you eating dried umbilical cord from a dead baby to get some love out of it?… I’m starting to hate this story cuz why is it so NASTY?! for what?!

this book is so gross constantly mentioning salt, stank coochie, piss, birthing fluids, blood & now genital mutilation?… all this has been in cultural/ historical context, but DAMN 😒 it’s disturbing

IDKY I thought this was gonna be anything but EMO when I went into it already familiar w/ Jeanne Duval’s life & death from syphilis in a mental hospital 💀… the other FMCs include an enslaved healer on a sugarcane plantation in Saint Domingue & a Nubian-Greek prostitute in like 300 BC… like girl, DUH!

lots of bodily fluids being mentioned… kinda nasty 🤢… still intrigued with the characters. tragic undertones, this story might do me in… the audio eats. I’m loving Bahni Turpin’s Creole & French-accented English

starting audiobook! 🎧 the RANGE Bahni Turpin has. she's SO GOOD!
