At first I skipped around in this; now I want to read every page so I started over. Hardwick is formidably intelligent and witty. She might have been scary to be around, though I sense graciousness too. She's a total delight to read, whether I agree with her opinions -- so incisive and acerbic, in a voice like no other -- or not.

I am about 3/4 through, reading some of these for the second time. I would say that Hardwick's wonderful book is a reference in a distinct, brilliant, dry yet warm voice. There is so much to learn from her about writing, values, psychology, history, current events. What a wonderful source. Every English lit teacher should make assignments from this book.
