Luke added a status update
Thus far on the rough and ready essay title docket, I have : Coming of Age of the Abject Woman in Victorian Literature; Gaslighting as Test of Faith in the Hagiographies of Early/Medieval Holy Women; The Pedagogy of Satan in Paradise Lost. People who don't like writing papers are seriously missing out.

Luke Ya ya. Aethelthrth, Oda, Osith, Christine of Marykyate, Perpetua, and so many others, all culminating in Margery of Kempe. I'm very glad I took this class. It's a weird combo that works really well.

Lyana Rodriguez I'm really interested in the second one.

Luke Ha ha, general consensus seems to be with the saintly women in this one.

message 5: by Lyana (new)

Lyana Rodriguez I've never read a hagiography so it's interesting.

Luke They're basically biographies except most of the women either didn't exist or have made up stuff tacked on and all the authors wrote them in order to legalize the ownership of their property after the Norman Conquest came in and tried to steal their stuff.

Lyana Rodriguez Huh, that is an interesting genre. Almost makes you want a revival.

Luke Ha ha! I don't think lawyers would like that very much. Hagiographies are half the reason why canon law is such a nightmare. Everyone gets their say, including holy people who happen to be dead.

Lyana Rodriguez But, man, it makes it so much more interesting. Think of the murder trials, my friend.

Luke I'd imagine commentators would be too busy describing how the particular characteristics of the murder of a saint mean the saint is actually a saint to convict the murderer.
