Oh, look! Stephen King won the Reader's Choice award for Horror.
What a surprise. :(
I love the guy, don't get me wrong, but there are other authors out there, and I think several of them wrote a better book than You Like it Darker.

Sean PREACH!

David He should be designated emeritus. Retire his jersey already.

Dustin I think his modern work is way better than his haters give it credit for and "YLID" was solid AF, but Malerman's "Incidents" among many other titles was far more deserving of the award. King is to horror fiction as Metallica is to metal music--when it's the only exposure millions have to a genre it's the only one they can recommend.

Diane Johnson I would personally like to see attention given to newer voices. Haven’t read Darker yet but I’ve read some things that I thought were great that never get a mention.

Michael Yea, his last several efforts were decent, but I haven't read anything better from him recently than The Institute.

Char I thought Revival was excellent and I even love Holly Gibney, but yeah, maybe we could retire his jersey? There are so many excellent writers of horror and dark fiction like Josh Malerman, Eric LaRocca, Paul Tremblay, Stephen Graham Jones and they never even have a chance.

Greg It's a popularity contest but worse... Also love King's work but I'm sure he got 100,000+ votes from people who didn't even read You Like It Darker

I'm sure he did. Oh! There's a name I recognize, I'll just vote for him kind of thing.

Denis (deez_bookish_adventures) My thoughts as well. I read it of course, I'm a big fan - but I certainly didn't think it rose to the "Best Horror" of the year.
It's Stephen King 🤷‍♂️

Char I'm a fan too! I just feel like it doesn't necessarily mean he writes the best book in horror every single year. It bums me out a little bit.

message 13: by Denise (new)

Denise He's great, but I think a lot of GR users vote for name recognition. They know they like his writing and they haven't read many of the nominees (or none of them), so they vote for the names they know.

Raechel I thought this too when I saw it. I love Stephen King, everything I've read by him has been a masterpiece. But I would really like to see some other authors/ideas winning. I thought there were some really interesting horror books this year. I decided in the new year I'm going to try to read all of the nominees that were up for the horror category! And I'll see which one I like the best of all of them.
