Once you’ve read enough of the book, you get used to the way Gibbon writes and it becomes a lot easier to digest what is in the text. This book makes Roman history seem like a really long, kind of slow telenovella where everyone gets stabbed.

This absurdly large collection of Roman history is definitely a reflection of the author’s writing style as well as the language of the time, making it a hard read. However, its detail and insight into this monumental civilization is unmatched. If you love history this would be for you. If not, there are absolutely no redeeming qualities that would incline you to read it.
