The story follows Kathy H. who is a carer for donors of the school in Hailsham. Kathy describes her time at Hailsham through lots of flashbacks from lots of different time periods. We are introduced to Tommy,who is a boy teased for not being creative in the school, and we learn about Kathy's friend group such as Ruth. We are introduced to lots of of characters but we dont find out much about them.
