“Wasn’t that enough?” she asked, and he could smell her tears, heard them drop and splatter onto the wood steps. “Wasn’t I enough?”
If he could have clawed his own heart out of his chest and offered it to her, if that would have made a difference, he would have done it. He would have knelt at her feet and let her take from him what she felt she was owed.

She had been so sad. So damned sad for so damned long, to the point that sometimes her grief felt like a sealskin in its own right — heavy and thick and slick on her back. She carried her grief where she no longer carried her skin. Because it was gone.
