Jono Spear Very much so! The introduction where he gives an overview of the different schools of thought for the discipline of biblical theology is worth the price of the book. His overview of each section of Scripture is a helpful guide. Now I’m into his essays on specific theological topics to show how “biblical” studies is “theological”. Exegesis and theological reflection are only done well and faithfully when the two are intertwined. His essay on creation is incredible and I’m gonna need to read and read-read it. In it, Childs draws from Barth to show how one of the main purposes of the creation account is to show God’s power to save. God’s “redemptive” works are the same as his “creative” works. When we read the creation account, we are meant to keep both witnesses of Scripture (OT + NT) in mind to see how Christ Jesus is creating a new people and a new place and giving his people a restored purpose—all with the same creative power and works found in Genesis 1, through the Word and by his Spirit.
