Hikers can’t imagine why a mother would abandon her baby deer and none imagine possibility that mom was hunted and killed — admittedly that would lack the symbolic parallel payoff but yeesh

Oh dear… the narrator is magically thinking as she describes a love interest as having so much in common as her then lists first the fact that they’re both on the PCT, but she overlooks the fact that the same is true for all the other men who are also on the PCT. I fear this dalliance will end not goodly

I met the author at a New School reading while she was still working on this, and although I’ve had the first edition hardback for years, only just now plucked it from my shelves. Flying through it! … poignant to read as a mother of a middle schooler who remembers what it was like to be the narrator’s age.
