So good. The piece "Writing Assignment" put tears in my eyes. It's a reminder (in part) about what amazing people teachers can be.

Continue to be impressed by the thoughtfulness of these essays. So sad that the piece about Trump and his likely voters from 2016 still feels so exactly relevant.

So far, one insightful essay after another.

Noteworthy connection to Turanny of Merit at this page: "the underprivileged are priced out of the dental treatment system yet perversely held responsible for their dental condition."

The 2014 piece on Celebrate Freedom Week, mandated by the Kansas state legislature, is hopeful in the sense that the featured classroom teachers were clearly trying to satisfy the letter of the requirements without uncritically incorporating the underlying ideology.

Killer sentence: "Legislators who need civics education passing laws about civics education: it's the kind of irony that threatens democracy."

Wow, that 3d essay about her mom being a Hooters girl with morals was moving.

Page 1 is a non-0 amount into the book, with the intro in Roman numerals :-) That intro makes the rest of the book sound intriguing, reminding me of Caste and perhaps The Sum of Us, but with obvious differences (ie race does not appear to be one of the big issues in this book, more the class differences).
