In this book the symbolic archetype would be fire vs ice. Evanlyn would be the fire and her and Will's captors and the setting would be the ice. When Will goes to the icebound he is very passionate but soon that all goes away and he shows no emotions towards anyone and anything, but Evanlyn never changes and she still is trying to escape. that is why Evanlyn is fire and why the setting and the captors are the fire.

The setting of the IceBound land is very consistent throughout the book since Will is captive. It takes place in the "Icebound Land" where the Skandians live. This also takes place in the 1200-1400s as they still use bows and arrows and they still have castles and kings. The only time the setting changes in this book is when Erak helps Evanlyn escape with Will where they travel through the mountains to get back home.

The icebound land would be overcoming the monster. There are two "monsters" in this story, his warm weed addiction and his captors. To escape he needs to defeat these two "monsters" so that is why it is overcoming the monster.

Will and Evanlyn have been captured and they are now working as slaves. Will has grown weaker and he has been introduced to warm weed, an addictive drug. He is met with terrible living conditions such as having rags for blankets.
