Jayson’s Reviews > Monstress, Volume 9: The Possessed > Status Update
Jayson
is finished

Notes:
(1) The final issue was pretty confusing, but that's nothing new with this series.
- I think I got the main plot points but, as usual, the politics of it all was not exactly crystal clear.
(2) As much as I enjoy this new cat group that's joined the heroes, I wish they'd done more to give them distinct personalities.
- Right now, their personalities are how they look.

Notes:
(1) Gee, I've been missing out on these single issue recaps! They're like no-nonsense elucidative endnotes.
- For example, we find out that Jagarath means "tiger Arcanics" and that Maika and Tuya were lovers. I mean, these are important things to know!
(2) Areka uses they/them pronouns, which makes sense as a humanoid seahorse.
- Seahorses being gender non-normative.

Notes:
(1) After an entire volume set in a hellscape, having so much color and daylight is a breath of fresh air.
- I've not been convinced Sana Takeda illustrates action well. Her art's best in tableau mode: beautiful backgrounds, intricate objects and people just sitting around talking.
(2) Cats and Kippa continue to steal every scene and be the best parts of this series.

Notes:
(1) This isn't out for another couple of weeks, so I'm going to be reading it in singles.
- Maybe I should have been doing so all along, because one big benefit right off the bat is that each issue begins with a recap, albeit fairly broad.
(2) I've been reading this series as part of a Halloween-themed group read, and I'm right on track to finish before October ends!
