...there was a shadow side to my ability to compartmentalize. Typically, I would put my inconvenient emotions away and then forget about them. My habit protected me from the discomfort of what I thought were unnecessary conflicts, but it made me less authentic and emotionally expressive in my relationships with others, which I didn't realize was problematic.

In midlife, I was beginning to learn that you can't split off parts of yourself and put them into a deep freeze, so to speak, without consequences. Those heads and bodies I reattached in my dreams would always bear scars, just as I would, because my lack of emotional integration significantly affected my marriage.
