This book is a combo of both overcoming the monster and in other perspectives it's a grand quest. In Captain Nemo's perspective he and his crew are on a grand quest under the ocean. In society's perspective there is a monster, a monster that needs to be feared and takin care of. There is also the perspective of the fisherman and scientists who wish to capture and study the beast, the also have found a quest.
