I understand that Jackson is working on a critical argument here, but to open a book about fantasy literature with "I won't be talking about Tolkien or others like him because they're too sentimental for 'real' fantasy" just does not vibe right with me. If your definition excludes most of the genre's central texts, maybe your definition is the problem
