Admitting confusion I don't get why the guard broke mere's sisters hand. Also, did they kill her or capture her after because Mere left he and ran.

So far I know that Mere is almost 18 which means that she will have to go fight in the war since she has no job. When she finds out that her best friend that will be sent to war because he lost his job she becomes very angry. She has come up with a plane but has not evened it yet.
