Evangeline's plan to get Hadley out of marrying Claire seems overly simple and unrealistic. There are so many conflicts going on at once here- first all of the Hadley/Evangeline meeting again stuff, then the de Palma stuff, then the blackmail/marriage stuff, now kidnapping...hot mess. Still no clue what the deal with Victoria/Isabel is or what the Scholar dudes even are...just like a fancy man club?

Who in the world is this De Palma person and why is she shooting/kidnapping people?? I would love a quick recap of backstory...most series do that at least somewhat to allow you to read in any order. The rest of the story is fine...but again, I feel like I've read this story before.

Definitely no idea what the Libertine Scholars stuff is about. The relationship part of the story is familiar, but not bad.

I am starting to wonder if one really needs to read books 1-4 for this to make sense. All this talk of Libertine Scholars and someone attacking is lost on me and hasn't really been explained.
