Deeply unsettling and vindictively articulate, Bright Young Women lays waste to the lie that was Ted Bundy’s characterization in the press and from society at large. This would have been far more powerful, however, if it had been told by an actual survivor or was researched to allow for real-life victims to be POV characters instead of the fictionalized victims we ended up with. It toes the line of exploitation.

On the other hand, Knoll fictionalizes some of Bundy’s victims while writing about real ones (e.g. 12-year-old Kimberly Leach). It’s not only distracting because you’re trying to figure out what is fact and what is fiction, but it’s also insensitive (bordering on cruel) how this story exploits actual events and real victims (including ones that are still alive, or have still-living family and friends).

I have extremely mixed feelings about the way this was written. On the one hand, it’s extremely powerful and absolutely nails to the wall the misogyny that took place in the 70s and allowed Ted Bundy to not only continue his killing spree, but also made the murderous incel into a poor victimized “young” man who needed coddling.
