Man, this book is heavy. Great writing, and a great job making you feel and understand the unique and wildly varied situations of the folks in each case history quickly, but it took so long to get into the actual crime-solving bit. @_@

Definitely not a cheerful book (even for a murder mystery)--lots of insightful, realistic characterizations, but such a heavy, unhappy set the author's chosen to go with. True, they've all been touched with tragedy so some heaviness is expected, but their whole lives are so uniformly awful (and revolve around the violence and misery women suffer in domestic settings). Well-written, but hard to get through...
