when calamity strikes and puts normal life under strain, feelings that have been stifled by everyday evasion can break free and make it easy to talk where before it felt impossible I wondered if this was always happening in Palestine, where calamity was always so close Or whether it was different for those who, living here, endured it without respite, for whom constant calamity was itself the condition of normal life

Looking back I wonder if boredom was not in some way a defence, if on a certain level I found it more stressful and confusing than I was conscious of, and my distraction protected me, keeping my mind clean from the violence.

I feel so dumb only just realising the extent of the division between Palestinians at home and in diaspora. It’s so interesting how the 48ers differ from her and how both differ from those in the occupied territories
