Wang Lung will be your favorite person in the book until he does the most heinous selfish stuff, and then redeems himself, and then does the most heinous selfish acts once more.

This book may have some pacing issues imo (some parts go too fast, some parts go too slow) but the main character is so complex, especially through the lens of today's values. He mostly has our modern values, but lives in the past and must abide by a patriarchal society that hinders his lifestyle. It's so amazing.

Some quality stuff. Some quality prose. Such in depth characters that are a product of their time, but still resonate with modern sensibilities. This book deserves to be taught in schools.

The momentum has not yet slowed. This book if it keeps at this pace, it may be up there among my favorite books. And the fact that this book was written by a white woman from America in the 1930s is just amazing too.

First two chapters in and I'm already blown away by the simplicity of the writing, the complexity of the characters, and what the plot is promising. We're in for some good stuff
