The author uses details that effective by showing the scene instead of straight up telling what happened which makes it easier for the reader to picture then to know it. "The cherry-red tip of a lit cigarette glowed in the darkness. It tangled, disembodied, as though held by a ghost". The author describes what the character saw in the bushes and didn't she say the light of a cigarette in the bushes, she visualized it

Shepard uses a hyperbole indicate the strong fear Emma feels and how the pounding is so intense it could cause a landslide, highlighting the setting that their in the desert

"When Emma breathed in, she could detect the faintest scent of coconut in the air. She looked down and saw a few tiny, glittering shards of glass on the ground. The amber-colored glass perfectly matched the glass in the light fixture that had nearly shattered her skull" In this she describes pieces of glass from light fixture that almost hurt her, using words like amber and shiny and it helps you visualize the glass
