This book takes place in a utopian world with a dark twist. No one in the civilization seems to have real emotion and they are deprived of many modern technology's. People are always being watched and all mistakes they make are announced on a loud speakers to correct those mistakes without pointing out that person. Everything must be perfect no one is left out, no one is different, everyone is equal.

When Jonas is chosen to be the new Giver his treatment by his peers and adults. The dynamic situation changes the way everyone looks at Jonas as he looks at the world in a new way. This new view may make a drastic change in him and will more than likely change Jonas for better or worse. Jonas has been split apart from the rest of the community and now he must live as an sort of outsider from the rest of town.
