Zombie stuff aside, if it wasn't because this was published in the early 2000s, I would say all they did was fictionalize the chain of events of the Covid pandemic. The fact they didn't, that this is supposed to be a fictional account, scares me more than any living dead could.

There is so much that's disturbing here, and none of it has to do with the zombies. The snapshot glimpses into human nature, how it goes into extremes under duress, regardless of origin, say so much about us. That it is fiction only makes reality sadder, for this fiction is built from the patterns we have historically established, and that, it seems, we are doomed to repeat endlessly.
