Kate is the oldest out of three children in her family. She promised her parents that she would watch out and take care of her siblings. Since she's the oldest, she has a load of responsibility on her to match Atlas and she's got a heart of gold. She's the kind of person that can't stand seeing anyone suffer or hurt, and instantly falls into a nurturing kind hearted person when she sees anyone suffering or hurting.

Like Michael, the boy in the story, John Stephen, the author, is the middle brother of two sisters. Like Michael, John was also picked on for absolutely no reason by his sisters even when he was totally innocent. He wrote about himself and his sisters. The author wrote this to explain his life how it was. He wrote it for his sisters to remember how it was when they were little.

I can relate to Kate, one of the 3 orphans. The other 2, Emma and Michael, are younger than Kate. I can relate to Kate because she has to take care of her younger siblings. Even though I'm not the oldest (I have an older sister), I have a little brother and little sister that I am constantly taking care of. But I can't relate to anything else about Kate. The 3 orphans constantly shift from one orphanage to another.

In the beginning of the story, he lives in his aunts laundry room in her trailer with fourteen other people. So basically, his parents are both dead. His dad was shot while at a grocery store. His mom died of a drug overdose.
