Love means not so much the acting or going forth of love, as that loving temper, or lovingness of soul, which disposes us to love whenever the proper object is presented.

Jesus had not the shallow joy of pagan delight in living; but the deep exultation of a conqueror setting captives free. This joy underlay all his sufferings & shed its light along the whole thorn-beset path which was trodded down by his torn feet.
