The first 100 pages or so are all about dinner parties in Russia and I recall next to nothing about them from my first reading in the past. The second 100 pages centers on the massive defeat of the Austrian army by Napoleon’s forces at Ulm, the Russian retreat, and preparations for a clash between the Russians and French. This is a good argument for reading some books twice because I remember none of this.

I’m at the eve of the famous battle of Austerlitz and it’s interesting how Tolstoy portrays the younger Russian officers as eager to fight and confident of defeating Napoleon even though few of them have experienced a sustained battle before. On the other hand, the older veterans think engaging Napoleon at this point will prove to be a costly mistake and have no enthusiasm for a combat situation at all ⚔️

A reread. The first was many moons ago. I’m sure it was the Garnett. A Russian speaker recommended the Edmonds which I already had on the shelf in a fat, gorgeous paperback. I remember several key characters but reading through all those dinner parties in the first 100 pages, I have no recollection of them at all. I’ll be reading a volume on the Napoleonic Wars in conjunction. Well, princess, we’re off!
