How to get notifications of your friends' updates:
check your "emails" settings under the "Account settings" tab - you might have it set to only get an email alert and not a notification as well. It might help to note that you will always get alerted with notifications about invitations, likes, and mentions, but you do need to change your preferences for comments.

Alas, I have it set to both and STILL don't get a notification or email on a lot of my reviews when someone comments. :( I wish they'd fix this already!
