A visual process of color constancy !

Monet: painted the catbedral of Albi 30 times at different moments of the day. From dawn till dusk. He saw all the different nuances of color. He was able to overcome the color constàcy of his brain. Most people would just see the face of the cathedral.

Most people think that they see what is, that they donot miss anything. They do not realize: they see what they hallucinate.

Art expert= art student, art historian, artist, professional, gallery owner etc…
Naïve = the Schmis, the novices
Experts prefer:
- abstract works (vs naïves prefer representational work)
- high art from museums (sentimental portraits)
- art is not there to please the crowds
- experts focus on background & rekationships of the objects, structure & composition (naïves focus on details eg hands, faces)

Art is not solely the result of an artist’s behaviour. It depends on the viewer’s behaviour too. Art feels like a handshake between the creator & the audience. The artist puts forth something as art, and the viewer has to choose whether he/she can relate to it. If a work confuses you, or makes you feel uncomfortable, then one can call it art. Whether it is good art, that is a different matter.

One can make an analogy with language: learning to speak is a universal, innate predisposition for all children even though individual children learn the particular language of the people among whom they are nurtured. Similarly, art can be regarded as a natural, general proclivity that manifests itself in culturally learned specifics such as dances, songs, performances, visual display, and poetic speech.
