The first seven pages of Book II are the best chunk of philosophy I have ever read. I make no claim to their truth (I hope he is wrong) but the depth with which Rousseau perceives hidden causes and the deft with which he extends these causes to their true implications is awe inspiring. His reasoning is like a rubber band ball.
