In this book, the main character is Julian Escobar. He is the hero of the story, because he is going on the voyage in order to bless the Indians and save them with his preaching, and teachings of Christianity. He also works to help improve the lives of slaves, and free them. He eventually becomes more of a suprhero, because he is hailed as a Mayan god returned after thousands of years away.
