I firmly believe that he just made up some words just to seem smart.
It works and his prose is extraordinary

The first story, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, is (don't quote me on this) the first modern detective.
Dupin (our main character) is a man of great deductive ability (much like our beloved Sherlock Holmes), and the story is viewed from his handman (also much like our beloved Sherlock Holmes).
Poe artistically crafts the scenery of Paris and masterfully describes the gory happenings of the murder.
A great start!
