Read the short story, “The Young Newcomer in the Organizational Department”, about a young man who is assigned to work for the Party’s organizational dept. on very short notice, despite being new to the Party and lacking experience. He soon discovers that operations are less organized and more dishonest than expected, which leaves him indignant. This work led to Meng’s criticism and 7 years of labor reform.

The main character, Lin Zhen, is dismissed for his lack of seniority and experience (courtier’s reply fallacy) in these business affairs when he questions the idea of fabricating presumptuous conclusions from productivity statistics. He does not back down and believes in his principles of not dismissing small issues simply because there are other greater issues at hand. His relationship with a female coworker parallels these events, as she dismisses him on the basis of his age when he questions the propriety of inviting him, a male coworker, over to her home to talk and eat when her husband is away. This story is similar to the works of Solzhenitsyn, and it also references other Russian works. Overall, it was interesting!
