It didn’t have to be that way. For example, the United States could have attempted to secure a negotiated peace with Germany independent of the Soviet Union and before Soviet troops had made their way into Eastern Europe on their way to Berlin. If the United States had reached such a deal, the people in those regions wouldn’t have had to live for the next 45 years under communist rule.

It had also lied to him about the likelihood of a spontaneous uprising against Castro. While he publicly took responsibility for the debacle, Kennedy vowed to break the CIA into a thousand pieces.

Johnson employed the World War III scenario on Warren. We don’t know exactly what was said, but what we do know from Warren himself was that Johnson alluded to the possibility that 40 million Americans would lose their lives in a nuclear war.
