Last November and December, I did an abbreviated read-through of the Bible (90 readings covering the big stories, maybe 25% of the book overall). I'm not particularly religious, but I felt it would be good for literary reasons. I found it quite interesting, and decided to go for a full read-through in 2016. As the title implies, this volume is broken into 365 readings, so I just need to read a little each day.

Reading through Paul's letters, currently on 1 Timothy. I don't like the idea that this one guy's interpretations are part of the canon, especially since he outright says "women < men" without any real support. I also find it interesting that Paul seems to be holding himself out as an authority by virtue of his experience. That seems to go against the whole "he who considers himself first shall be last" thing.

I'm on the book of Lamentations, which as you might expect is kind of a downer. Jerusalem has fallen, the people have been scattered to many nations, and the lands of Israel and Judah won't see any significant settlement for seventy years. The Big Guy doesn't hate them, He's just really disappointed in their behavior and thinks they need some time to get their heads straight.

Through the uncredited/undated Psalms and the book of Isaiah, now on to Micah. There are some good stories in the prophets' books, but the prophecies themselves are really long and dull.

The pop-culture version of Jonah seems to miss the point of the story. It's not about keeping one's faith in dire circumstances. Jonah knows why he's inside a giant fish; God told Jonah to do something and he tried to hide from it. His display of faith is basically his accepting that you can't escape fate.

1 Kings 13, give or take. The two-kingdom setup is pretty firmly entrenched, and ruled by Asa and Baasha. I believe that puts us three generations past David.

Reading 1 Kings and Proverbs. I'm about a week behind where I should be, but it would only take about two hours of focused reading to catch up. Or, more likely, doubling up on readings for a few days.
